With a commitment to donate one percent of its profit, time and product, Orlando-based Mojo Interactive has recently launched one of Central Florida’s most unique and comprehensive corporate philanthropy programs.
Through its One Percent Policy, the Internet marketing solutions company will donate one percent of its 2008 profits to AIDS/LifeCycle and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, while the blindness charity Anaridia Foundation will receive free product in the form of web hosting and design services. Numerous local charities will benefit from one percent of Mojo Interactive’s time in the form of office-wide activities, such as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and participation in holiday adopt-a-family programs administered by the Catholic Charities of Central Florida and the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. The company also gives each employee an extra day off so they can volunteer at a local charity of their choice.
“Social responsibility is a very important part of how we do business,” said Glen Lubbert, Mojo Interactive’s founder and president/CEO. “It is essential that companies give back and our One Percent Program is our way of formalizing the commitment we are making to the community.”
Since its founding in 1998, giving back to the community has always played a leading role at the company. In fact, when Lubbert set about establishing the six core values he wanted Mojo Interactive to live by, social responsibility was first on the list.
“I’ve always thought that if you treat your community and your customers well, business success will follow,” said Lubbert.
Much of Mojo Interactive’s success – its most well-known product, online physician referral service LocateADoc.com, routinely enjoys more than half-a-million unique web site visitors per month – can be credited to recruiting and retaining exceptional employees, another reason that Lubbert feels that the One Percent Policy makes good business sense.
“By giving our employees the opportunity to volunteer at a charity that is important to them, it shows that we care about them and their interests,” said Lubbert. “That is an important part of our strategy of recruiting the best employees and making sure that they enjoy coming to work every day.”
By pledging one percent of its profits, products and time, Lubbert hopes that Mojo Interactive’s example will lead to other corporations making a similar pledge.
“I hope this shows other companies in Central Florida that they can plan and budget for philanthropy just like they can plan for other financial and human resource expenditures,” said Lubbert. “I’m sure that most companies help out in some way. But just imagine if every single company put a stake in the ground and said ‘here is what you can expect from us.’”
